Reviews
Eely, eely goodReview date: 2010-02-19 Rating: 8 out of 10"SilverFin," the first novel in Charlie Higson's Young Bond series was recommended to me by an astute 11-year-old whose taste in literature I will never question. In this volume, James is a schoolboy just starting at Eton, where he encounters bullies and is encouraged to enter a sports competition sponsored by the father of George Hellebore, James' prime nemesis and fellow competitor. Eventually, James finds himself in Scotland, learning how to drive his Uncle Max's Aston Martin and plotting with a scruffy red-haired boy to determine what happened to a lad who went missing in Loch Silverfin. Many tense, gruesome, page-turning chapters later, the mystery is solved and the reader is left breathless with the series of impossible situations James has managed to escape.
One of the most delightful elements of this book is the insight it affords the reader into the adult James Bond that is yet to be. When asked at school, "What's your name, boy?" He answers (of course), "Bond--James Bond." There is even a horse named Martini. Well-crafted language and brilliantly descriptive scenes throughout leave the reader both shaken and stirred.Good start to the series, Not as good as others.Review date: 2009-09-15 Rating: 8 out of 10It's a good start to the series, not as good as ALEX RIDER, or Jason Steed or Cherub. Young James Bond is written back in the day, 1937, so they have no gadgets or anything cool.
James is a bit nerdy, although he tries to act cool. The book is very well written, I like the way the author writes, its easy to read and simple.
I think this is the best of the series and would make a great film.Great teen boy readReview date: 2009-05-08 Rating: 10 out of 10My son is a huge fan of the Alex Rider books, and it was a challenge finding something else that would grab his attention. This book did.A Good StartReview date: 2008-12-09 Rating: 8 out of 10A good beginning to a series of Bond as a younger person. It will be interesting to see if Higson will come up with story lines that explain the idiosyncracies of Bond as an adult.
My only criticism is that the book was very wordy and often meandered-Fleming's books were always terse and to the point.
